So TRUE!!! Check out BUY NOTHING CHRISTMAS: https://www.adbusters.org/campaigns/bnd
I am supporting this campaign this year and I have three kids! It doesn’t mean that I don’t love them that I’m not buying them presents, it means that I love them even more to want to raise them with humility, kindness and compassion rather than greed and selfishness.

HAHHAHHAH. I must admit, though, that I am buying Christmas gifts (and I’m a Jew!)
BUT. I am buying books, and buying my parents an organic-farmshare. I am buying presents that are good for people and good for the world. Though I don’t think you can buy your way out of a recession/global warming/etc. etc. I do think that your small personal choices do matter (and they especially matter to the local business owners who are hurting like hell in this economy).

Making Coffee

Black Coffee by Professor Bop my fingers burned on frayed
circuits in the drip-brew

and too much force of water
steam through used grounds

I give in to richer scents
I give French press a try

Word choice

challyzatb:

shiyiya:

Hm. A phrasing choice in something I just read is niggling at me. Would “x is autistic” not be better than “x has autism”, on account of not implying that the autism is separate from the person? The former phrasing seems to feed into the perception of AUTISM IS STEALIN OUR BAYBEEZ.

(line from http://www.npr.org/blogs/health/2009/12/lawmakers_seek_halt_to_abuses.html )

I know a lot of autistic people take great offense at the ‘x has autism’ construction and prefer ‘x is autistic’, but I can’t say anything beyond that.

And as for that article… :(.

For myself, I tend to nounify it or to say that I’m on the spectrum. The former is for emphasis on identity (and it not being separate from me), the latter for emphasis on commonality within diversity. Actually, I kind of like the “with” phrase though. Next time I’m out in public alone and someone presumes that means I want to socialize, I think I’ll say, “Actually, I’m not alone. I’m here with my autism.” :-D
